. Berlenga archipelago it is composed of granitic islands, located in the Atlantic Ocean, 5.7 miles west of Cape Carvoeiro. They administratively depend on the parish of São Pedro, in Peniche, West sub-region. It was the first protected area in the country when, in 1465, King Afonso V of Portugal banned hunting on the main island of the Berlengas (Berlenga Grande). But mainly you will discover a country where within a 1-hour drive the landscape constantly changes, in any direction. As if with every hour of travel we entered another country. This diversity makes Portugal unique for traveling, discovering, and spending holidays.
Ilha da Berlenga or Berlenga Grande is divided into two parts, almost completely separated by a seismic fault that to the north gave rise to the so-called Carreiro dos Cações and to the south to Carreiro do Mosteiro. The largest part of the island is called Berlenga and represents more than 2/3 of the island's total surface; the smaller part is called Old town. It has a surface area of 78.8 hectares, approximately 1.5 km in length, 0.8 km in width, and a maximum height of 85 meters. Here you will find the Duque de Bragança Lighthouse, o Fort of São João Baptista of Berlengas, a Carreiro do Mosteiro beach, restaurants, and a campsite.
